Bear Grylls is no stranger to adventure, so it’s no surprise he’s venturing into unknown territory by launching a brand new series, Bear Grylls: Face the Wild, from an unexpected source: Facebook. The social media platform is branching out into original content and has teamed with Grylls for a new series that aims to bring Facebook users into the survival expert’s corner of the entertainment world and test their limits.
Face the Wild is the latest series from the television personality. Grylls has been running around in harsh, unforgiving environments on television for over a decade now, with series like Man vs. Wild, Worst-Case Scenario, and Running Wild with Bear Grylls. In addition to demonstrating how to survive an array of challenging conditions in his various series, Grylls has also played host to plenty of celebrity guest stars on his series from Jake Gyllenhaal to Kate Winslet and even Barack Obama.

It seems Grylls will be playing host again in Face the Wild, as he’ll connect with people via Facebook before helping them “break out of their comfort zones” by taking them on a very Bear Grylls-like adventure. A synopsis for the new series illustrates how Grylls is keeping with tradition while expanding to reach a potentially whole new audience. Check out the synopsis below:
“Survival expert Bear Grylls surprises Facebook followers, who have inspired him, with a chance to experience the wild firsthand. Participants share their remarkable stories while Bear helps them break out of their comfort zones and embrace the power of the great outdoors. This brand new series launches March 21st and features a different journey each week – some inspirational, some hilarious, and some heartbreaking – only on Facebook Watch!”
The program certainly seems to be taking a more inspirational approach to the typical Grylls series, as is made evident when the host connects with Jonathan Blank, a military veteran who is also a double amputee. But that’s just one of many participants Grylls will connect with during the 10-episode first season, as the trailer introduces several other individuals seeking a little help and guidance from the outdoorsman.
As far as original content goes, Face the Wild looks to be a interesting early step for Facebook Watch. Not straying too far from what the company is already known for perhaps blurs the line between actual original programming and self-promotion, but that it’s being done with a known quantity like Grylls helps put a more interesting spin on that approach. In fact, the move is a little like Apple, which recently launched two original shows of its own, blending its Apple Music brand with James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke and then turning Planet of the Apps into a Shark Tank-like reality program. These are small steps for companies new to the original content game, but it could be the first steps to creating the next big rival to Netflix.
