Captain Marvel Director Scouts Locations

Fieldwork begins for Captain Marvel as the film’s co-director Ryan Fleck (joined by Anna Boden) has just implied that he is on a location scouting mission for the movie. The film, which launches Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel as Marvel Studios’ first female superhero headlining her own movie, revolves around fighter pilot Carol Danvers, who gains super powers after being caught in an explosion with a Kree device.  It is set to hit theaters in March of 2019 with principal photography scheduled to commence this upcoming February — presumably after work on the still-untitled Avengers 4 wraps up.

Over the last several weeks, the casting sheet for the film is slowly being filled-up with Jude Law joining the project as Captain Mar-Vell and Ben Mendelsohn, supposedly playing the movie’s main antagonist. Although we’re not yet certain who he is going to be in the movie, the Skrulls will also be incorporated into the fold as some sort of villains. A period piece that predates Iron Man – the first entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain Marvel is set in the ’90s with the promise of seeing a still two-eyed Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). This makes her current whereabouts a mystery in the franchise.

Fleck took it to his Instagram account to share two photos: one aboard a train with a desert landscape in the background and second a pine-tree-lined, snowy terrain. Both pictures are not very telling in terms of the film’s narrative and it’s hard to tell where exactly the location where these photos were taken from. However, given the vast difference in weather, it’s interesting that Fleck posted it in just a span of several hours away from each other – unless they were snaps taken previously and have just been shared now. We know from earlier reports that unlike most MCU movies that are filmed in Atlanta, Captain Marvel’s production will be based in California. More recently, new rumors surface that it is also looking to shoot some scenes in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. From the looks of it, the obvious reason for these location choices are the lucrative tax incentives that both places offer. Creative-wise, it does not seem to have any significant bearing, especially with the movie set in the ’90s, meaning any city that looks too contemporary for that era won’t fit the bill for the film.

Given that this is the character’s origin story, we expect that Captain Marvel will heavily feature Earth-bound backdrops. But we expect that once Danvers finally has full control of her immense new power, her adventures will bring her to the cosmic world more than just staying grounded.
