Chaos Walking to Undergo Reshoots; May Delay Release

Lionsgate’s Chaos Walking movie will reportedly undergo reshoots later this year that may delay the YA adaptation’s early 2019 release date. After a bit of a lull in the wake of The Hunger Games‘ diminishing success and the box office flop of the third Divergent film, Allegiant, Hollywood has dipped back into the YA sci-fi/fantasy well for some upcoming blockbusters. One will debut later this year with Jennifer Yuh Nelson’s The Darkest Minds, which recently unveiled the first trailer, while another is set for early next year. That film is Doug Liman’s Chaos Walking, an adaptation of Patrick Ness’ YA trilogy that follows the first novel, The Knife of Never Letting Go.

Prior to filming starting on Chaos Walking, the production tapped two up-and-coming actors who have since become well-known stars thanks to their respective franchises: Tom Holland, who plays Spider-Man in Marvel Studios’ superhero universe, and Daisy Ridley, who portrays Rey in Lucasfilm’s latest Star Wars trilogy. The stars filmed Chaos Walking in the latter half of 2017, wrapping in November 2017, but it looks like Holland and Ridley will be taking time out of their busy schedules to head back for reshoots.

THR is reporting that Chaos Walking will head back into production for two to three weeks of additional photography later this year. The reshoots being scheduled so long after principal photography wrapped likely has to do with the stars’ busy schedules. Holland is filming the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming this summer – after wrapping up promotional duties for Avengers: Infinity War – while Ridley heads to work on Star Wars: Episode IX this summer. THR reports the reshoots may not be until December or January, which could impact the planned early March release of Chaos Walking.

Ness, who’s worked in film and TV in addition to penning a number of YA novels, is in negotiations to write the script pages for the reshoots on Chaos Walking. Ness joins a list of screenwriters who have worked on the project that includes Charlie Kaufman, Lindsey Beers, John Lee Hancock and Gary Spinelli. Considering Ness wrote the novel on which the movie is based, and his past work on the script for A Monster Calls (another adaptation of one of his books), he seems to be the most qualified writer Lionsgate could tap for the additional script pages.

It’s unclear why exactly Chaos Walking is undergoing reshoots or what Lionsgate and Liman hope Ness will be able to add to the film with his additional pages. Of course, reshoots are common for a big blockbuster production, and with a budget ranging from $90 million to $100 million, there’s no doubt the studio is hoping for a box office success here. Though reshoots often inspire concern among fans who closely follow the productions of upcoming movies, additional photography doesn’t necessarily indicate a film is in trouble. Certainly, both Holland and Ridley are well-versed in reshoots thanks to their work on Marvel and Star Wars movies.

Still, fans looking forward to Chaos Walking may be hoping the reshoots don’t delay the film’s release. That wouldn’t be a bad indicator for the project either, of course, because it’s mainly a result of the stars’ schedules. But if the release date is delayed, fans will have to wait longer to get their first look at the upcoming movie. Hopefully Liman, Ness, and Lionsgate can get the reshoots in the can and still make the March 2019 release date for Chaos Walking.
