DCEU’s Flashpoint Movie May Be Filming In Canada

Flashpoint is reportedly set to film in Vancouver. Following several directorial changes with both Seth Grahame-Smith and Rick Famuyiwa attached to direct at one point, the movie finally locked in brand new helmers early this month with Spider-Man: Homecoming writers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. Ezra Miller will reprise the titular character after his official debut in Justice League, with its narrative set to adapt one of the most iconic The Flash comics narrative of the same name.

The DCEU only has Aquaman coming out in 2018, but that doesn’t mean Warner Bros. isn’t working on their superhero franchise. In the last several weeks, DC Films has gone through personnel changes with IT‘s Walter Hamada named new president of production, while Chantal Nong is the new vice president of production. There are numerous projects on the docket, including Gavin O’Connor’s Suicide Squad 2 and the unconnected Joker origin film produced by Martin Scorsese. If this latest development is an indication, it seems like Flashpoint is also joining the list of films gearing up for principal photography.

A new report from Omega Underground reveals that Warner Bros. and DC may be planning to film Flashpoint in Vancouver. As stated in the article, this is the first time in quite a while that a superhero film from the studio will be shooting in the Canadian city following 2009’s Watchmen and 2013’s Man of Steel. Most of the films in the franchise filmed around Europe, with several other location shoots, while James Wan’s Aquaman shot in Australia. The in-production Shazam! meanwhile is currently shooting in Toronto.

The new intel is interesting, considering that the movie has yet to nab a release date, much less a production start. The film was originally scheduled to debut this March based on Warner Bros.’ slew of films announced in 2014. But over the last few years, the DC Films universe has undergone several changes in terms of timeline and personnel. Flashpoint wasn’t the only movie marred by director changes and other setbacks, resulting in a very different franchise than what Warner Bros. set it out to be. News about potential filming locations could indicate the film is once again in active development. It makes sense given that the DCEU has yet to formally announce any more projects beyond next year’s Wonder Woman 2. If Flashpoint begins shooting late 2018 or early 2019, it will be on track for a 2020 release date.

Despite the news, it’s best to not get our hopes up too high, especially since Warner Bros. hasn’t confirmed any roll-out date for Flashpoint. At this point, we should already know that the DCEU slate can quickly change anytime. That’s not to say that we can’t be excited by the news. If anything, it’s best the studio quietly works on projects, making sure that they have a great script and that everything is already planned before they announce anything. Perhaps they’re saving a huge announcement for this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.
