Doug Jones Wants to Make a Proper Hocus Pocus Sequel

Disney fans may yet have a spell cast on them all over again, as an official Hocus Pocus movie sequel could still happen – if Doug Jones gets his way, at least.

The story of the Sanderson Sisters is well known by children of the ’90s, but director Kenny Ortega’s cult classic never managed to open the book of spells again and bring a sequel to our screens. There have been plenty of rumors over the years that the House of Mouse could again unite the cast of Bette Middler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy, but with news of an upcoming Hocus Pocus TV movie reboot, it looks like our hopes had done a vanishing act. However, Jones thinks that there could still be more to come.

While the 57-year-old reportedly has nothing to do with the upcoming reboot/remake, Jones told Digital Spy that we shouldn’t give up on the old gang getting back together just yet:

“There was talk about doing a ’20 years later’ sequel that I would have been involved with. I was actually approached and asked about that. I would love to reprise Billy Butcherson.”

Expanding on what happened to the idea of picking up where we left the coven of witches in 1993, Jones went on to say that we could still light The Black Flame Candle yet:

“It’s not off the table. The news article that I read about this TV movie sounds like… I’m not sure if it’s a reboot or if it is that ’20 years later’ sequel. It was grey about what the storyline was. So I’m just going to keep my knees bent and be ready in case they call.”

Could Jones be referring to that long-awaited Tina Fey sequel that is definitely not a remake, or is that still lurking somewhere in development hell? Admittedly, a continuation wouldn’t go anywhere without the leading three reprising their roles as Winifred, Sarah and Mary – all once expressed a desire to return -but at least Jones is still willing to come back for more.

Jones is best known for his creature work, with his recent roles including The Asset from The Shape of Water and Commander Saru on Star Trek: Discovery. Billy Butcherson in Hocus Pocus was one of the actor’s earliest roles and, similar to the likes of Middler herself, Jones has been outspoken on the idea of the TV remake. As with the cast of Charmed slamming the idea of revisiting the original story without their involvement, the Hocus Pocus stars seem a little put out by plans to make a movie without them. Even Ortega has said that he would prefer a Hocus Pocus sequel with the original cast, rather than a reboot for the Disney Channel.

In a rare case of Hollywood magic, Hocus Pocus has grown in popularity over the years, mainly thanks to its yearly syndication on October 31. Although the movie performed averagely on release, it is arguably more loved than ever some 25 years later. This means that reactions to the idea of a TV movie remake rather than a direct sequel have been mixed, as most Hocus Pocus fans are still holding out that someone can change the minds of Disney execs. Either way, it sounds like Jones is ready to rise from the grave once more as the Sanderson Sisters hop on their broomsticks to cause more Halloween horror.
