Fans Need To Be Prepared for Heartbreak In Avengers: Infinity War

Avengers: Infinity War co-director Joe Russo forewarn Marvel fans to come watch the film emotionally prepared. As the most-anticipated blockbuster of the year slowly nears its debut, the cast and crew of the film have begun their global, multi-city press tour. Screenings, however, only include some sequences from the first act of the movie, with people only going to see the full film for the first time during its Los Angeles premiere on the 23rd so as to prevent any spoilers from leaking out. And while no one still knows what goes down in the highly secretive flick, one thing is for sure, it’s going to be heartbreaking for loyal MCU followers.

Admittedly, Marvel films tend to lean more on a lighter take on their superheroes. Characters are often funny, snarky and would engage in witty banter right away. That’s not saying that they don’t have the emotional depth as others tend to criticize them on, it’s just that humor is such an integral part of how these characters deal with their own personal issues and tragedies. But with stakes so high in Infinity War, not to mention its catastrophic nature, fans should prepare for the worst.

Speaking with Metro UK during the recently held red carpet and press event in London for Infinity War, Joe reiterated on why Thanos isn’t your typical one-dimensional villain from past Marvel movies. And in order to translate how terrifying and powerful he is on the big screen, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes would be backed into a corner and forced to make hard decisions in order to defeat him:

“This is it. Thanos is an unstoppable villain he’s virtually invincible, he’s highly intelligent – genius level intelligent – he’s like the Genghis Khan of the universe, and to stop him it’s going to cost them a lot. They’re going to have to see if they’re willing to pay that price, and that’s what these movies are really about.”

The biggest takeaway, however, from Joe’s comments are his parting words – a warning to fans to come to Infinity War emotionally prepared for what’s about to go down. This is not the first time that folks involved in the film foreshadowed deaths, in fact, they’ve been doubling down on the idea for months now -proof that Marvel Studios isn’t fooling around with the losses that the Avengers will suffer in their upcoming bout against Thanos. Having said that, the co-director also promised some light-hearted moments that would hopefully ease the sorrow that the flick will inflict upon MCU followers.

“What we meant by that is to be prepared. What we want is for the audience to be prepared, as there’s a lot of surprises – there’s going to be a lot of humour and a lot of heartbreak.”

It’s no secret that Marvel’s Phase 1 characters, especially its three foundational heroes: Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America are the most susceptible to dying in the forthcoming twin Avengers sequel. Not only does it makes sense business-wise considering that Robert Downey Jr.’s, Chris Hemsworth’s and Chris Evans’ contracts are up after Avengers 4, their deaths are also significant in pushing the franchise to a brand new chapter. For years, Marvel Studios’ has been slowly expanding their roster of characters that could take over the mantle from the original Avengers line-up, still, nothing would compare to the principal heroes who have been there since the beginning.
