Game of Thrones just wrapped up filming its biggest battle sequence ever. One of, if not the best series on TV is gearing up for its final outing with six, 90-minute offerings to tie any loose narrative ends left. And based on the latest intel from the show’s ongoing production, HBO is going all-out for their critically-acclaimed project.

Aside from its engaging and intriguing narrative, the HBO series is mostly known for its high production value with sweeping landscape shots and indoor detailed sets. It’s also no secret that Game of Thrones has a penchant for location shoots, especially around European countries including Croatia, Iceland, Malta, Morocco and Spain. But if there’s anything specific from the show’s last 7 seasons that stands out when it comes to its production value, it’s arguably the incredible Battle of the Bastards from two years ago. However, it sounds like it won’t be long before another fight sequence tops season 6’s crown jewel.

As reported by Game of Thrones‘ dedicated site, Watchers on the Wall, the series has just finished filming its biggest battle sequence scheduled to air in one of its last six episodes next year. The aforementioned sequence took 55 consecutive days to film at the Moneyglass set in Toome, Northern Ireland, and the Magheramorne green screen set. The article also cited assistant Jonathan Quinlan’s Instagram post sharing a celebratory/thank you message sent out to the cast and crew who worked on the project:

“This is for the Night Dragons.

For enduring 55 straight nights. For enduring the cold, the snow, the rain, the mud, the sheep shit of Toome and the winds of Magheramorne.

When tens of millions of people around the world watch this episode a year from now, they won’t know how hard you worked. They won’t care how tired you were or how tough it was to do your job in sub-freezing temperatures.

They’ll just understand that they’re watching something that’s never been done before.

And that’s because of you.”

It is easily presumed that what was filmed is perhaps the climactic battle of the series when the Night King and his White Walkers go up against the (hopefully) combined forces of Westeros. That said, considering that Game of Thrones is mostly known for its plot twists and turns, it’s important to keep in mind that the show could still throw a last minute curve ball at fans and pull something entirely unexpected behind the aforementioned fight sequence. Regardless of its context, one thing is clear:  the HBO series is aiming high for its final season as they attempt to go out with a huge bang.

That said, filming still isn’t over as principal photography for Game of Thrones season 8 continues until late summer. After that, it’s safe to assume that the creative team behind the show will soon start post-production – something that could take additional months of work considering that amount CG that needs to be infused on raw footage. That means that chances are that the film will debut its last outing in the spring of 2019 at the earliest – almost a two-year hiatus since its season 7 finale.
