[SPOILERS for Stranger Things 2 ahead.]
The minds behind Stranger Things aren’t quite sure how long the show will last, but they can reveal some tidbits about season 3. When Stranger Things was first dreamt up by the Duffer Brothers, the plan was to make the series an anthology show. Doing so would allow for plenty of ’80s references and genre homages without the need to craft a big overarching narrative. When that changed, however, many fans wondered if them magic of season 1 could be replicated. With season 2 of Stranger Things now out, however, it looks as if those fears were unwarranted.
Now, the biggest question with Stranger Things outside of the show’s narrative mysteries is regarding how long the show will last. Stranger Things season 3 is already in development, which isn’t surprising considering how big of a hit the series has been for Netflix so far. In the past few months, however, the Duffer Brothers have waffled over whether the show will hit four or even five seasons eventually. While they still don’t know the answer to that question, they have some ideas about how things will progress forward from here.

E! spoke with the Duffer Brothers and producer Shawn Levy about the future of Stranger Things, and the team confirmed that a time jump would once again occur between seasons. Beyond that, Ross Duffer says they’re still working out how much longer the show will go:
“We don’t actually know. I think, you know, four to five seasons is likely where we’ll end up, but who knows? I mean, none of this official, and we know where we want to go. We’re trying to figure out still how long it’ll take to get there, so we’ll see.”
There’s obviously no shortage of places the creators could take Stranger Things. From the Upside Down to the shadow monster to Eleven’s mysterious past, the established mysteries of the show are still in need of exploring. Naturally, the team won’t reveal where season 3 is going to go exactly, but Levy did tease one likelihood:
“I think we’ve clearly implied there are other numbers, and I can’t imagine that the world will only ever know Eleven and Eight.”
Though fans have been mixed on the story of Eleven and Eight together, it’s hard to deny their adventures helped to further flesh out the world of Stranger Things. If the show has any hope of growth, it will need to spread beyond Hawkins and the characters who populate the town. Given how many other kids like Eleven and Eight are still unaccounted for (at least nine of them), the story of the psychic kids is one area of Stranger Things lore that is ripe for additional exploration.
Stranger Things 2 is now available though Netflix.
