2017’s massive horror hit IT gets a DVD and Blu-Ray release date, as well as special features listing, including 11 deleted scenes. When it comes to sheer box office success, there were few bigger surprises this year than IT, which has earned nearly $700 million worldwide on a budget of only $35 million. While many anticipated IT doing well financially, seemingly no one anticipated the film performing well enough to become the highest grossing horror film in history, knocking off classics like The Exorcist and The Sixth Sense.
IT wasn’t just a big hit with audiences either, as critics by and large loved the film too. Horror movies are rarely critical darlings, although one could argue that IT has a lot more layers to its story than the average fright flick, as did the Stephen King novel from which IT draws its inspiration. Naturally, IT’s home video release is quite highly anticipated, whether one opts to purchase it digitally or on a physical media format.

While previous rumors had suggested that IT would release in December, that’s actually only half true. According to Bloody Disgusting, Warner Bros. will initially bring Pennywise home on December 19, but only for digital purchases. Those looking to buy IT on DVD, Blu-Ray, or 4K disc will have to wait until January 9, 2018. It’s only a delay of a few weeks, but it’s likely to be a painful one for IT fans who’ve been waiting not-so-patiently to see the film again, and check out its special features.
However, one thing worth mentioning is that the specs for the DVD/Blu-Ray/4K release don’t say anything about a director’s cut of the film, which was previously promised to fans by director Andy Muschietti and producer Barbara Muschietti. The disc will include a selection of 11 deleted or extended scenes, but they will seemingly not be reincorporated into the film itself. Perhaps Warner Bros. has decided to wait on doing a director’s cut until the release of sure to be blockbuster sequel IT: Chapter 2 in 2019.
Elsewhere on the extras front, the list isn’t quite as plentiful as one might hope for from such a hit film, but what’s there sounds interesting. The first featurette is Pennywise Lives! and invites viewers to “Discover how Bill Skarsgård prepared to portray the primordial creature known as Pennywise the Dancing Clown.” The second featurette is The Losers’ Club, which allows fans to “Get up close and personal with the teenage stars of IT as they bond together during the production.” Finally, in the featurette Author of Fear, “Stephen King reveals the roots of his best-selling novel, the nature of childhood fear and how he created his most famous monster, Pennywise.”
