Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn confirmed a subtle but very interesting detail about the prison sequence. Kyln Prison plays home to one of the movie’s most exciting and pivotal set-pieces, as Rocket Raccoon hatches a plan to help break the main group out. But before that, they had to spend some time in the joint while wearing matching yellow jumpsuits – except for Groot, of course.
But you may have noticed that all of their jumpsuits aren’t exactly alike. They each have unique stripe patterns running down the front of their left legs. And a recent online post pointed out that each of those stripes represents a crime that they’d been caught committing. Now, Gunn has taken to his own page to not only confirm but also expand upon the idea.

Gunn shared a lengthy post on his Facebook page on Thursday that linked to a recent Reddit thread about the Guardians of the Galaxy prison scene. He verified the truth of the original Reddit post in that the stripes each represent crimes that the characters were convicted for. Additionally, the different colors represent different categories of offenses. The writer/director credited costume designer Alexandra Byrne with the idea for the jumpsuit stripes, while he provided her a list of crimes to denote.
As for the stripes on each of the heroes’ jumpsuits and what they represent, Gunn said he will try to track down a complete list but couldn’t promise that he could finish it. He did debunk the Redditor’s assertion that Rocket’s gray stripe represented indecent exposure. But off the top of his head, here’s how he attributed each of the main characters’ crime stripes:
— Peter Quill: Penny-ante robbery, grifting, criminal conspiracy, sex with a member of a royal family (which was consensual, but considered an “outrageous crime for someone from his caste”)
— Gamora: “Long list of murders and assassinations” as ordered by Thanos
— Rocket: Mercenary activity, grievous bodily harm, arson, escaping from prison, public drunkenness
— Drax: Grievous bodily harm, murder, and “every variety of destroying stuff you can imagine”
Guardians of the Galaxy stands as one of the most impressive cinematic achievements of the hugely successful Marvel Cinematic Universe. And it’s because of the eye-popping level of detail in the characters in the costumes as much as anything. But Gunn’s confirmation of the Reddit post reveals that the movie is even more detailed than most fans may have imagined.
Despite Gunn’s stunning affirmation of these fine details, fans who are patiently awaiting that complete list from the director may be disappointed. Gunn sure doesn’t sound convinced he will remember every single stripe. But at the end of the day, it’s an amazing Easter egg for Guardians of the Galaxy viewers. Understandably, you may have missed or passed over those stripes as if they held no meaning. But in the context of the prison, they mean a whole lot.
