Kevin Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob will strike back with a new VR series from STX Entertainment. The stoner pals Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Kevin Smith) first appeared in Smith’s debut feature Clerks. The characters would recur throughout Smith’s filmography, making especially memorable appearances in Chasing Amy (where Bob broke character and spoke) and Dogma.
Smith later made his ever-stoned comedic duo the center of their own film with Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, in which the two friends took their comic book Bluntman and Chronic to Hollywood. The film afforded Smith a chance to take many shots at the movie business, while also giving Mark Hamill arguably his greatest non-Star Wars role. Smith recently announced he’s working on a new Jay and Silent Bob movie in which the characters go back to Hollywood to stop the Bluntman and Chronic movie from being rebooted.

While fans wait for Jay and Silent Bob to return to movie screens, STX Entertainment announces it will create a VR series built around the two characters (via The Tracking Board). Smith will write, produce and direct the series, shot entirely from the perspective of Silent Bob. Viewers get to follow Jay as he leads the way through a series of what are sure to be hilarious adventures.
In addition to Jay and Silent Bob VR, STX will release a whole slate of new VR series via its STXsurreal division. The line-up will first kick off with The Limit, a live-action series from Robert Rodriguez starring Michelle Rodriguez. Other new offerings include New Tricks, a comedy series starring Ed Helms as a Radio Shack employee visited by a magical elf, and The Kiev Exchange, a CIA action thriller from director Peter Berg. STX is also working on untitled projects from Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista and John Wick writer Derek Kolstad. All series will see release via the Surreal channel, which launches as an app in mid-2018.
VR of course remains very much in the early stages of its evolution as an entertainment medium. However, big studios have recently begun ramping up efforts to take advantage of that market with tie-ins to their top franchises. Marvel has jumped into the game with both Spider-Man: Homecoming VR and Marvel Powers United VR on Occulus. Star Wars too has embraced VR with Jedi Challenges. And DC fans aren’t left out, with Justice League VR.
The key to making VR more viable is to keep attracting talent capable of making content that will interest folks who might otherwise not be that keen on donning a headset and wandering around in some virtual environment. Soon, fans of Jay and Silent Bob will get to immerse themselves in adventures written by Smith himself.
