As season 3 of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow wraps up this week, co-showrunner Phil Klemmer offered up some details about what fans can expect in season 4: more mythology and more monsters.
Season 3 saw the Legends fighting something that was a lot more than the usual supervillain. They faced off against Mallus, a demon using Damien Darhk’s daughter as its vessel to bring its power to the world of mortals. This season even brought in the Hellblazer himself, John Constantine. Although the Legends teamed up with Darhk in the penultime episode of season 3, Darhk betrayed them and now Mallus has come to his complete power and is out there roaming the world creating havoc.

In an interview with TV Line, Klemmer said that season 4 of Legends of Tomorrow will offer similar storylines. Whereas the Legends previously fought supervillains, such as Darhk, they will go up against more monstrous beings in the future. This season saw the team dealing more with the supernatural and the occult, and with Constantine becoming a series regular in season 4, Mallus is but the beginning of what’s to come:
“But you know that Constantine is coming onto the show [as a regular] next season, so we want to go deeper, we want Mallus to be used as ‘the tip of the iceberg.’ He is not human, and we want to start playing with the idea that Earth hasn’t always belonged just to our kind.”
Klemmer also mentioned that fans can expect more of these kind of bad guys in the next season:
“We want to get into the world of fantastic myths and monsters a bit more. It’s kind of presumptuous for anybody to think they have ownership of this Earth or any part of it. Not to get deep into immigration metaphors, but Mallus is an ancient evil, he doesn’t understand humans and doesn’t understand why we have any claim to controlling this world of ours.”
Not only that, but the Legends will start season 4 with one less team member than they started with. Klemmer has confirmed that one team member will leave the series soon, and that the season 3 finale will contain “heartbreak.” The team has lost members before, including Captain Cold, so they’re no stranger to that kind of loss. Nonetheless, it should resonate with fans of the series.
Although the Arrowverse initially seemed reluctant to embrace supernatural and monster stories, the arrival of Constantine on Arrow and now Legends of Tomorrow has changed that. Watching the Legends go up against monsters is a lot more exciting than having another season of them dealing with Darhk and his lackeys. It’s not exactly the Constantine season 2 that many wanted, but fans will take as much of the character as they can get.
