Another wrinkle has been added to the ongoing saga of Luke’s allegiance in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, with the latest unsurprisingly added by Mark Hamill himself. The idea of Luke Skywalker turning to the dark side is nothing new for fan theories given his family history and bouts of anger. Even Return of the Jedi was originally meant to end with Luke following in Vader’s footsteps. But as promotion for Star Wars 8 has continued, many fans have been finding more and more evidence to suggest that the film will reveal Luke’s villainous shift.
The latest trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi prominently features Luke blaming himself for Kylo’s radicalization. This has led to many fans believing Luke pushed Kylo to the Darkside. The basic idea is that Luke explored more and more of the Force, eventually passing his teaching to Kylo who took things way too far. The theory grew even more with the reveal of a set of in-theater promotions positioning Luke as a villain, which Hamill quickly picked up on and amplified online. Since that time, the actor has regularly tweeted out humorous ‘Dark Luke’ theories. Now, he’s starting to shoot them down.

Mark Hamill tweeted out an image of the new Japanese poster for Star Wars 8 that features Rey looming over the cast. The poster follows a similar one with Luke doing the same, which many fans (and Hamill) noticed evoked Darths Maul and Vader in posters for other Star Wars films. Hamill, however, thinks this new poster blows the theory apart.

While Hamill himself has fueled the speculation, it’s been clear the whole time he’s simply trolling fans (something he does a lot on Twitter). He’s also regularly said to wait for the film to arrive, which he reiterates here. There’s also a nod to conspiracy theories regarding The Beatles, which the group themselves often humorously addressed.
Naturally, Hamill isn’t going to give away his character’s fate one way or another – even if some Star Wars 8 merch contains spoilers. Still, the actor has said he’d love to play evil Luke someday. While not a confirmation that it will ever happen, it’s hardly out of the realm of possibility. Many involved with Star Wars have envisioned such an arc, and the evidence for why Luke would turn evil is there. Given all the loss he’s experienced and his belief that the Jedi must end, his exploration of the dark side is more than possible.
There’s also the chance that Luke turning to the dark side wouldn’t necessarily be an act of evil. After all, there’s plenty wrong with the Jedi’s philosophies and lots of gray areas when it comes to following the Force. Even if Luke doesn’t turn evil in the next film, we could see him go beyond the teaching of the Jedi in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
