Robert Downey Jr. Spreads Tony Stark Valentine’s Cheer

Robert Downey, Jr. is celebrating Valentine’s Day by supporting those who ship Tony Stark with his various Avengers: Infinity War costars. It’s been almost five years since Iron Man 3 hit theaters, but the Armored Avengers has been keeping plenty busy in the MCU since then. He was a major player in both Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War, and even played a key supporting role in last year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming – serving as something of a surrogate father figure for Tom Holland as Peter Parker.

Downey, Jr. has been an important part of Marvel Studios for ten years now, and will continue to be one later this year when he reprise his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man yet again during Infinity War. The third Avengers movie will see Tony and his fellow Avengers cross paths with the Guardians of the Galaxy for the first time on the big screen, and should provide even more fun character team-ups in the process. For now, however, RDJ is spotlighting Tony’s other long-standing relationships in the MCU.

RDJ posted a special Valentine’s Day message to his Twitter account today (see the entry embedded below), offering his support to Tony Stark shippers of all varieties. Among the “ships” referenced here are of course Tony and Pepper Potts, but also Tony and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), as well as Tony and his Science Bro, Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo).

Tony and Pepper have had a rocky relationship in the MCU and the comics.  Civil War split them up, but the pair had (seemingly) reconciled by the end of Homecoming. Meanwhile, Tony and Steve have been superhero frenemies on the level of Batman and Superman since they first met one another in the MCU, yet are always willing to go to bat for one another. Finally, Tony’s relationship with Bruce is (oddly enough) also his most stable in the MCU, thanks in part to the remarkable chemistry that Downey Jr. and Ruffalo have onscreen – striking a perfect balance in both science and superheroics.

The MCU is full of unrequited love perfect for shippers, with Steve and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) being perhaps the most popular “ship” of the lot. Evans has expressed his support of that reading between his character and the Winter Soldier, while Stan wants to see Bucky actually become Captain America in the franchise. No matter what superhero ships you champion this Valentine’s Day, Avengers: Infinity War is sure to add fuel to some fires when it arrives later this year.
