Actor Thomas Jane has revealed a little backstory on his character from Shane Black’s forthcoming sequel The Predator. This news comes shortly after Fox CEO Stacey Snider confirmed the movie will take place in suburbia, and praised the script for being “…unexpected and totally fresh.” A motion poster for the film was also revealed a couple of weeks ago, which shows a silhouette of the titular hunter being formed by lightning.
This new film is looking to kick-start the franchise, which has been on ice since 2010’s Predators. While that entry received decent reviews and turned a profit, it didn’t really excite viewers enough for a direct sequel. Fox is hoping this installment will reinvent the series for a new audience and have placed it in Shane Black’s capable hands. In addition to writing Lethal Weapon and directing The Nice Guys and Iron Man 3, Black previously played the ill-fated Hawkins in the original Predator – who was the first on-screen victim of the alien hunter.

While official story details for The Predator are still mysterious, co-star Tom Jane has shed some light on the backstory of the main characters in a podcast interview for Shadow Nation (Via AVP Galaxy). The former Punisher star revealed his character is one of a group of hospitalized war veterans who get dragged into the story by accident. “We play these veterans from like Afghanistan, Iraq war or whatever. But we’re all f***ing crazy so we go to the VA hospital to get our meds. We’re all like shellshocked, PTSD…soldiers.”
It all kicks off for the group when another soldier (played by Boyd Holbrook) – who’s seen a UFO landing – gets thrown into a hospital bus with them.
“And he’s a guy they’ve actually marked to kill him because he’s seen a UFO, he’s seen the Predator ships come down so they lock him up and throw him in with us lunatics. They’re going to take that bus, drive it down to a ditch and shoot us all just to get rid of this one guy. But, of course, we take the bus over and we’re all like ‘f*** that man, let’s go kill these f***ing Predators ourselves’ and we’re just crazy enough to believe that this guy really did see a UFO and there’s these aliens out there.”
In addition to his role in The Predator, Jane has also drawn rave reviews for his turn in Netflix’s 1922. The movie is adapted from a Stephen King story, where Jane plays a farmer who murders his wife and seemingly finds himself haunted by her – and some hungry rats. The actor has previously appeared in some high profile King adaptations, including Dreamcatcher and Frank Darabont’s The Mist.
The star also seems genuinely excited for The Predator, stating “We had a blast. It was funny. You know the Predators, they looked…you know they didn’t f*** those up. They’re still Predators and they’re pretty much the same Predator as always. I think it might be great.” There’s still no word on when the trailer will be appearing, but Black seems to think it will be early 2018 before any footage for The Predator arrives.
