There was supposed to be a scene that would have made clear reference to Valkyrie’s bisexuality in Thor: Ragnarok, Tessa Thomspon reveals. One of the newbies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thompson’s Valkyrie is set to become one of the favorites thanks to her personality and ability to hold her own in battle. But, there is another facet that makes her unique among the players in the MCU as she is the first LGBT Marvel character to grace the big screen.
Adding to the endless reasons for people to talk about Ragnarok, fans have been generally receptive of Valkyrie being bisexual in the film without it being explicitly stated. However, Thompson now shares that there was actually a scene that would have more clearly referred to her bisexuality that was ultimately cut.

Speaking with Rolling Stone, Thompson revealed that she convinced director Taika Waititi to shoot a quick shot of a woman walking out of Valkyrie’s bedroom, an idea the filmmaker actually agreed to do. Unfortunately, the scene was eventually removed as it takes away the attention from what would be a bigger narrative exposition that was taking place simultaneously. The Creed actress also shared some insight regarding her involvement in crafting Valkyrie’s characterization on the big screen, saying:
“There were things that we talked about that we allowed to exist in the characterization, but maybe not be explicit in the film… There’s a great shot of me falling back from one of my sisters who’s just been slain. In my mind, that was my lover.”
In the comics, Valkryie is known to have a close relationship with archeologist Annabelle Riggs — a basis of the character arc that Thomspon wants the Asgardian warrior to tread in the MCU. And while Riggs has not yet made the jump from print to the big screen, planting those seeds in Ragnarok certainly makes her eventual introduction much easier. Should Marvel Studios ever greenlight the pitched all-female project, exploring Valkyrie’s sexuality in that movie would further the franchise’s efforts toward greater inclusion and representation.
After Thor: Ragnarok, it is still uncertain where we’ll find Valkyrie next. But we won’t have to wait too long to find out as Thompson is slated to reprise her superhero gig in next year’s Avengers: Infinity War. Last we know, she was filming some shots in Edinburgh for the Russo brothers’ film. How she will factor in the bigger battle against Thanos remains to be seen, but with the fighting skills that she has, she could definitely be of help to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and their allies to keep the universe safe.
