Get a glimpse of some new footage from Westworld season 2, Fahrenheit 451, and Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects, starring Amy Adams in this new promo from HBO. Although we’re entering into the typical mid-December holiday lull for television, Home Box Office reminds its subscribers (and those pesky Game of Thrones pirates) there’s a great world of new content coming in 2018.
The promo is the sort of thing HBO releases every so often, touting what’s new and what’s returning in the coming months. This time, there’s a heavy emphasis on the comedies that typically make up the networks’ offering early in the year, with quick peeks at the second seasons of Divorce with Sarah Jessica Parker and Thomas Haden Church and Pete Holmes’ Crashing. The video also showcases critic favorites Insecure and Silicon Valley. And while the returning comedy line-up remains strong, it’s the new series and movies that will likely grab your attention.

The promo offers a look at Succession, the global-media/family drama starring Brian Cox and Kieran Culkin, as well as some new footage from both Alan Ball’s new family drama Here and Now and Barry, the dark comedy from Bill Hader. Among the clips of HBO’s upcoming documentaries and sports specials, you can see a shot of Al Pacino in Paterno and a fleeting glimpse of Michael B. Jordan and Michael Shannon walking in slow motion in Fahrenheit 451.
That is certainly a packed slate for the year ahead, but the two biggest reveals are saved for last. Following on the heels of the first images that were released this week are a few short clips of Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects, starring Amy Adams. The limited series centers on a troubled reporter played by Adams who is assigned to cover the murder of two young girls in her hometown. Given the success of Flynn’s Gone Girl and strength of the series’ cast, which includes Patricia Clarkson, Elizabeth Perkins, and Chris Messina, it’s no doubt this will be looked at as the next Big Little Lies for HBO.
But the biggest reveal in the promo is the footage from Westworld season 2, which offers a hint as to what the storyline might be, with Ed Harris’s Man in Black saying, “You wanted me to play your game. I’m gonna burn it to the ground.” It would seem that after being so impressed with Dolores’s display of freewill at the end of season 1, the park’s VIP is set to challenge the Hosts – or former Hosts, as it were – as they embark on the first test of their freedom. With the series likely to air in the early part of next year, chances are we’ll learn more about what’s to come very soon.
