Warning: The following may contain spoilers for Avengers 4.

New Avengers 4 set photos tease the return of Tony Stark’s Captain America: Civil War technology dubbed B.A.R.F.. Used during the genius, billionaire, playboy philanthropist’s talk at MIT, he briefly discussed how his creation hijacks the hippocampus to clear traumatic memories. At that time, he made it clear that the tech could not alter reality but is instead simply geared towards helping people deal with regret and depression. However, it seems like some new set photos hint that it could be used for something bigger.

Production for the next two Avengers movies has finally wrapped up as celebrated by a ginormous cake with Thanos looming over it. But the last few days of filming continue to bring us some interesting set photos that either give us an inkling of what goes down in the upcoming movies or pose more questions regarding its narrative. Yesterday, we saw Steve Rogers sporting his original Captain America uniform as he hangs out with an older looking Tony Stark and Scott Lang with his updated Ant-Man suit fueling longstanding rumors of the possibility of time travel in the movie.

Atlanta-based photographer, PassoriJoe, posted a couple of photos from the last few days on the set of Avengers 4. In the snaps, we see the directors, as well as a staff who based on him, carries props around. At first look, it does not seem like there’s nothing special about the images, but upon closer inspection, we see a toolbox that has the label “BINARY AUGMENTED RETRO FRAMING” or as Tony Stark said in Civil War, BARF. Check out the images below:

It’s important to note that Civil War and the next two Avengers sequels are written and directed by the same people. Writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely who reteams with the Russos for the third and fourth time (after working in the last two Captain America films) making it easier for them to plant plot seeds as early as Cap 3 that will have a bigger use down the line. While its introductory use is to help people, particularly Tony, to deal with trauma, he could’ve continued working on it and made it to something that can potentially help him and his team defeat Thanos once and for all.

What is more interesting is that it seems like the Russo Brothers are melding both the scientific and mystical parts of MCU in the upcoming narrative, two pockets of the MCU that have been tackled separately. Jane Foster said herself back in the first Thor film that  “magic’s just science we don’t understand yet.” Initially, people presumed that Doctor Strange is the primary person who can make time travel feasible granted that he has the Eye of Agamotto (if Ebony Maw fails to retrieve it from him). But it’s easy to forget that with game players such as Stark, Bruce Banner and the whole of Wakanda — with their advance tech capabilities, can concoct something to make the impossible possible. Sure, the lore of the Infinity Gems is still rooted in mysticism, but it has been used in several scientific endeavors over the years, including the creation of the Maximoff twins, as well as Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
