A new fan theory suggests Laurence Fishburne could be playing Silver Surfer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Disney’s move to acquire 21st Century Fox’s film and TV divisions finally official, the return of the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, as well as their tie-in characters, to Marvel Studios is within reach. This has opened a lot of discussions as to how these IPs can be incorporated into the already existing MCU lore and recently, an intriguing possibility has been put out there, drawing interest from fans.
Fishburne is not new to the superhero movie genre. The actor was in 2013’s Man of Steel as Clark Kent’s boss and Daily Planet editor, Perry White, and reprised the role in 2016’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. But he admits that he was more of a Marvel fan, than a DC follower and has always wanted to join the MCU. He eventually nabbed a part in the upcoming Ant-Man And The Wasp as Bill Foster, one of Michael Douglas’ Hank Pym’s former assistants and the second iteration of Giant-Man known as Black Goliath. However, a new rumor suggests that the 56-year-old could be playing someone entirely different in the franchise.

Reddit user atxknicks floated the interesting notion that Fishburne could play Silver Surfer in the MCU, citing the actor’s recent comments about the tumultuous process of him ending a Marvel gig. Based on his statement, it appears that he already had something in mind when he first approached the studio but due to “a lot of legal red tape,” it wasn’t going to work out. The team eventually came back to him with a plan for him to be involved in Ant-Man and the Wasp and is now developing a secret project with them. Check out the author’s theory below:
“Laurance Fishburne was cast as bill foster/Goliath for the upcoming ant man and the wasp. But during the interviews, he states he came to marvel with a project but they couldn’t do it, he got cast as bill foster and then they came back to him with something big that will “change the world…
…At first, I thought he could just be talking about bill foster but in watching the interview, he is actually talking about ant-man and the wasp and people would figure out that he would be bill foster/goliath by his characters name so no need to be so secretive.”
Obviously, with nothing concrete to back this up, it’s just a rumor. Still, with the endless possibilities brought about by the Disney and Fox deal, part of the fun is to speculate what Kevin Feige and his cohorts are cooking for the IPs that they will soon get a hold of. Should this particular theory come to fruition, introducing Silver Surfer in Phase 4 and perhaps, even before it, fits Marvel Studios’ plans to further explore MCU’s cosmic pocket. Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is not only working on the third film from the sub-franchise but is also developing spinoffs that would propel the individual members of the team to go on their respective adventures. Given the humanoid’s ability to travel through space, it’s possible that one of those off-shoots could feature the superhero.
Silver Surfer first jumped on the big screen in 2007’s lesser received Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer with Fishburne providing the voice for the superhero while Doug Jones playing the physical embodiment of the role. With a tie-in to Marvel’s first family, the Tim Story project mostly followed the character’s comic book origins being Galactus’ herald in return for the safety of his home world and the woman he loved. With his impending reintroduction, now under the MCU banner, it would be cool to see Fishburne reprise the role, one way or another.
