A Scandal and How to Get Away With Murder crossover is in development, as “peak TV” continues to throw up interesting instances of universes colliding. Both of these shows are owned by Disney’s ABC network, and executive produced by Shonda Rhimes. They also both focus on female protagonists surrounded by criminal activity. Thanks to all of those connections, it’s easy to imagine this pair of popular series intersecting successfully.
This isn’t the first time in recent memory that seemingly unlinked crime shows have come together for a surprising crossover. Back in 2015, FOX chose to smash together the worlds of Bones and Sleepy Hollow, bringing its supernaturally-tinged procedurals into a shared universe in a bid to surprise viewers and boost ratings. The Scandal/How to Get Away With Murder crossover presumably has similar targets.

The news of this crossover event broke over at Deadline Hollywood, although no details were released regarding the crossover’s premiere date and expected content. Hype is already starting to build, regardless, with Kerry Washington doing her bit to facilitate it. The Scandal star took to Instagram to share a snap from the How to Get Away With Murder set:
As the positive reception to this social media snap suggests, the possibility of Washington’s Olivia Pope sharing the screen with Viola Davis’ How to Get Away With Murder character Annalise Keating is a very exciting prospect for fans of these shows. Although the casts of Scandal and How to Get Away With Murder have mingled many times in real life, they have never appeared in the fictional realm together.
Although we don’t yet know the details of this crossover, it seems safe to assume that fans of both shows will flock to their television sets to watch it unfold. This could be the perfect icing on the cake for the cast, crew, and fandom of Scandal. The show is set to end after its current season, and this could be a great way to go out with a bang.
With Scandal‘s imminent end in mind, it is clear that this crossover will take place at some point between now and the end of Scandal season 7, which is set to definitively conclude the series in the spring of 2018. It is plausible, though far from confirmed, that the crossover will unfold across two episodes: one from Scandal season 7, and one from How to Get Away With Murder season 4. That way, both shows could reap the rewards in their ratings.
