Spider-Man spin-off Silver & Black – directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and centred on Silver Sable and Black Cat – may be filming in Mexico. Prince-Bythewood’s Marvel comic book film adaptation is currently in pre-production and is slated to being shooting before the first quarter of the year draws to a close.
Sony has already made some hires with regards to the crew. Black Panther‘s costume designer Ruth E. Carter and Doctor Strange visual effects supervisor Sheena Duggal are reported to have joined the production team. Carter – a two-time Oscar winner – previously worked with Prince-Bythewood on Love & Basketball, while Duggal has a long history with the superhero genre that includes VFX work on Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, and Marvel’s Agent Carter TV show. Duggal already had a history of working within Sony’s Marvel universe too, having supervised the VFX on Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, and is currently working on the Tom Hardy-led Venom spin-off film.

THS is reporting that Silver & Black will be filming on location in Mexico, though Atlanta (where Sony is also filming Venom) will serve as the main production base for the movie. The site also reports that Silver & Black will begin filming under the title Tri-Border on March 5 and continue on through to mid-June. Casting announcements haven’t been made yet, but Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin) is among those rumored to be in the running for a leading role.
So far, Sony is keeping Silver & Black‘s story details under wraps (though there are a lot of rumors), but there will be a lot of pressure on the studio, Prince-Bythewood – who has co-written the script with Christopher Yost from a story by Lisa Joy – to deliver after the success of Spider-Man: Homecoming. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and his team were the creative force behind the third Spidey reboot, so now Sony has to prove they can do it without their help.
What the director has revealed is that Silver And Black is an “anti-hero buddy movie”. Prince- Bythewood explained that she “wanted to tell the story of two damaged women who are at war with each other but need each other to survive.” Prince-Bythewood, who recently directed the pilot of Freeform’s Cloak & Dagger TV series, is hoping to create a superhero version of Thelma & Louise which begins with the internationally renowned mercenary Silver Sable leading her team on a mission to hunt down brilliant jewel thief Felicia Hardy, aka. Black Cat.
Given the limited amount of solo superhero movies centered on women, Silver And Black will hopefully continue the standard set by Wonder Woman and inspire studios to greenlight similar female-led films in the genre. And, with the diversity shown behind the scenes with the hiring of Prince-Bythewood – the first African-American woman to direct a studio-backed superhero film – and certain crew members, we might just see something similar onscreen too.
